Journey

As I've lived and hopefully grown I've learned that there are many journeys we will take throughout this life. Some that we place upon ourselves and some that we are given. Although each journey has its own path and lessons that abide with it, I know that the only way to conquer them is to turn to our Father in Heaven and stand side by side with our Savior to truly come to an understanding of each step we take through our journeys.

We found out we were expecting our third little baby on November 20, 2010. We were excited and hoping for a little boy. Thus far, we have defnitely enjoyed our journey as parents, but were definitely a little apprehensive as to adding a third baby. I wanted it so much, but just wasn't sure it was the best timing. Sometimes, I've learned, Heavenly Father has a little hand in the timing of things.

On December 30, 2010 we went in for our first appointment. We were given an ultrasound at that appointment to measure the dates and to recieve and accurate due date. As the ultrasound tech performed the ultrasound we were excited to see our third little baby for the first time. The ultrasound quickly came to a close and the ultrasound tech became quiet and typed her report. As I read what she typed I could tell something seemed to be wrong. The doctor came in as she was finishing the report and gave a solemn mmm... Then proceeded to explain to us that a measurement at the back of the neck (the nuchal translucency) was measuring large at 4.0 mm, usually found below 2.0mm. The doctor then explained to us that our baby has an increased risk of being born with a chromosome disorder, most likely Down Syndrome.

We left the office that day feeling confused and as though what we were told was a certain outcome. I cried, I questioned, I went from expecting a healthy little baby to a very uncertain future.

As I read through the paperwork given to us by the doctor, I focused on the Chromosome Abnormality information. I read about a First Trimester Screen that would allow us to have another ultrasound and bloodwork drawn to come up with a ratio of the likelihood our baby had a chromosome disorder. I called the following Monday and scheduled to go in on January 11, 2011.

During the appointment at the Perinatal clinic, the doctor didn't give us much more reassuring news. The nuchal translucency still measured large (can be seen above, the black space behind the babies head and neck area) and the dr. wasn't able to find the lower left arm. She told us that our baby didn't likely have Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), but most likely had Trisomy 13 or 18. Which means the 13th or 18th chromosome is tripled and if we wanted to know we needed to perform the diagnostic testing within 2 days. I had already done research on all of these disorders and was well aware that children with Trisomy 13 or 18 may survive to birth, but would not live longer than a year because of the severe complications that occur. I was devastated and couldn't believe that this was the news I was hearing, I was sure we would be told that things were okay. So, with fear we were faced with and an even more uncertain future we chose to have the testing done the next day.

The procedure took quite a bit of time to prepare for and we were told that there was a high chance of a miscarriage mainly because the circumstances of this pregnancy showed we wouldn't likely carry this baby to term anyway. They used the ultrasound throughout the procedure and used a long needle to obtain a sample from the placenta. We would find out the fate of our little baby within a week. I had no complications arrise from the procedure and stayed on pins and needles throughout the next weeking waiting to hear the dreaded news.

On January 19 we were told that our baby did not have Trisomy 13, 18 or 21 and that it was a little BOY!! I was so excited to hear the news after feeling like the dr's made it out to be certain our baby had some type of chromosome disorder. A day later we recieved the call stating all 46 chromosomes came back normal. However, we were told that there was a chance that the baby still had a chromsome issue and we would discuss further testing at our next appointment.

On January 26 we went in to meet with the specialists again. We were told that the baby still didn't have a left hand, but had both of the bones in the lower left arm. The nuchal translucency, now the nuchal fold was now measuring in the normal range, which is a positive sign. We chose not to have any further testing done on the sample that was taken and to try to enjoy the rest of the pregnancy.

I felt movements from my little guy on February 2 and they keep getting stronger and stronger. I can't believe what a joy it is to feel the little kicks and turns. It literally brings a smile to my face and a light to my day each time I feel him move.

On February 23 we went in and saw our little boy again. He has a smile on his face in this picture. He is growing well and moves a lot!! The dr's can hardly get still images of him. The dr said she was sure I didn't feel every movement he made and that was a good thing- because he is a mover! I wouldn't mind feeling them all though. Our little boy definitely doesn't have a left hand and the reason behind it is unknown at this time. I can't help but think what I did wrong, but there isn't anything I've done or haven't done to cause this. They are monitoring his heart closely for possible defects, which can be related to a left arm problem. So far it looks normal, we will meet with the Pediatric cardiologist on March 30th. Then we'll meet with an Orthopeadic surgeon in the third trimester. The drs will continue to monitor his growth and we will hopefully meet our little boy around July 23, 2011.

Throughout this experience I have definitely had the opportunity for growth. I went from wondering how we would do with a third child to wondering if we would be given the opportunity to have this little baby. I have questioned a lot and prayed even more. I know that our Father in Heaven has a reason for everything and I know that this little boy will be more of a blessing to our family than I can even imagine right now. I'm so gratefulf for this experience. It has given me the opportunity to question my Saviors love and to understand it all over again and in a whole new light. I know that our Savior loves us and stands by our side, I know that he is there for us no matter how high the waters may come. As hard as it may be at times to lean on him, I am slowly learning that if I do I can conquer things that I would have never imagined and even come out understanding a little more in the end.

Our little boy will be named Christian Rafael. Christian, follower of Christ, after my Great Grandfather whom I remember with such fondness. Such a loving, gentle man with a great smile, oh how I loved sitting on his lap in his recliner. Rafael, meaning God has healed, Antonio's Grandfather, whom I only met once, but in the one meeting he told me of his belief of Angels and how he knows that they exist among us. May both of these dear men be Angels guiding my little boy throughout his life on this earth. I'm sure they have already been by his side as God has played a role in helping our little boy to have a chance at survival in this world.

Well, this is all backwards, but here it goes...

There is something about being an Aunt that I love!! I don't know if it's that I can send them home at the end of the day or that I simply have the most amazing nieces and nephews!! Probably the latter, because I'd keep them all for as long as I was allowed!

I haven't had the opportunity to take any of my nieces or nephews out for a while since Sara moved away :(. That literally used to be the joy of my evenings and weekends- when I got to spend time with those beautiful kiddos. I've been excited about Crystal's move here for that very reason!!
Yesterday Santana and I took Connor, Aiden, Lydia and my two girls to the zoo! I know CRAZY, right?? Actually it was a very calm and peaceful experience! We enjoyed it throughly. I just love my sisters children. Both Sara and Crystal have done an amazing job bringing up their beautiful babies. They are so kind and sweet. I know that parents don't see this side all of the time, because I'm one!! But, these children are so kind and gentle and full of love to share, I just want to hug and squeeze them!! I can't wait to see Santana's little Chloe grow and be able to learn from her as a mother too! That's the best part - I have amazing mothers to learn from and we are all working together to help eachother raise beautiful spirits!

If You're Happy and You Know It

This has been Hallie's favorite song lately. From learning to clap her hands to patting her head, she has been excited and performs her newly found skills repeatedly for us. We have been working on "stomp your feet" with her for a while. Being that she has just begun standing, she can't do it exactly like us, but started "stomping" them while sitting. I was singing it to her the other day and she began stomping her feet very excitedly. I had to capture it on video.

Hallie is such a happy little girl that is catching on to things very quickly, most likely to keep up with her big sister Emma. I know the feeling... Big sisters are blessings indeed!

Safe in my arms

From the moment I found out I was expecting Hallie I promised myself I would enjoy her infancy, for the moments pass so quickly.

With Emma, being a first time mom I remember being on edge, thinking she needed to sleep by herself or she'd become attached to my arms and never learn. Well, I slowly began to realize that babies need that attachment and gave in to Emma, but not without the guilt of what if...

Hallie however, has not given me the chance to wonder... She's been attached to me from the beginning and only seems to be comfortable if she is being held. She has given me the blessing of not being able to second guess if what I'm doing is right, because she won't have it any other way.

It is amazing to hold this tiny infant in my arms and see the comfort and contentment on her face when she snuggles her little face next to me, just to say, "I know you're there". It's these
moments that make me realize how great a job it is to be a mother and how our arms can be the most treasured gift in those first months of life and beyond.

Hallie Mabelle

My beautiful Hallie Mabelle was born on June 15 at 11:45 pm. We arrived at the hospital at 7:00 am that morning after being in labor the whole night before. When we arrived I was 3cm dialated and very excited that my body had actually gone into labor on its own. I was able to walk around and get in the tub during my labor because of the new wireless monitors, so the experience of the labor was wonderful. Antonio and I were alone and able to bond through the experience of bringing our daughter into the world. At 11:00 am they came to check me and break my water, I was dialated to a 4 and my water had already broke on its own. The pain was intense, but so worth it! After all, I had wanted this experience ever since I had Emma. At 3:00 and 8:00 they checked me and I was still a 4. I hoped I would progress further, but knew that a c-section would be the next step. The midwives and doctor gave me plenty of opportunity to try to get the labor to progress. However, at 11:00 we decided that the c-section would be the best and safest delivery for my little girl. Although it is still hard for me to accept that I will never have the chance to deliver my babies, I am glad that Hallie made it safely into my arms! After our four day stay in the hospital, we were excited to take our little girl home! Although I must say, the four days were nice and gave me time to try to rest and recover!
Emma was very excited to see her new little sister at home. She wanted to hold her and care for her from her the minute she met her. The adjustment has gotten a little more difficult this week, but Emma loves and adores her little sis. Hallie is adjusting well and is as beautiful as ever. I am so blessed to have a baby to hold in my arms and love and cuddle. I am aware now at how quickly they grow. I pray I can hold on to these moments and treasure them forever!
This was Hallie for her first outing! Isn't she just beautiful! She really is "berry" sweet! At her two week appointment yesterday she weighed 8lbs 5.5 oz, that 1 lb 2 oz more than a week ago. I am so excited to see her happy, healthy and growing. Being a mom has to be the best job in the world!

A Camping Adventure

Before I move on to my beautiful Hallie, I thought I should post about our adventurous camping trip. Santana, Gabe and my family all decided to go camping at the end of May, when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I knew I was crazy, but I thought our family wouldn't have the chance for outdoor adventures if we didn't go out on a limb and just decide to try it out. The first night was a disaster. We arrived after 10pm, Santana and Gabe had already set up camp (that was nice), and Emma didn't want to wind down for bed. So, we basically stayed up the whole night, with cat naps in between. Emma didn't want anything to do with the tent, I don't blame her when she's used to her nice cozy room. So, Emma and Mommy ended up sleeping on the seats in the back of the car for about 2 hours. That was quite hard being 38 weeks pregnant!

However, the next day Emma proved to be the best little camper. She took her nap in the tent and spent the rest of the day roaming the outdoors and enjoying hot chocolate. She had a blast!!

She thought she owned the camp grounds. She is a natural!
Mom, Manuel, Santana, Gabe, Antonio and Kylee all got to ride the river rafts, while Emma and I held up camp. We witnessed some beautiful accents of nature in the meantime. It was a lot of fun!
These are the macho men, that made fun of the girls that were excited to have a shower near by. Little did we know they would spend the $6 in quarters that mom left on their own showers. Leaving the girls scrounging for change!! After all, they didn't want to smell like fish!
So, lesson learned, if we're going to camp, we need to arrive early so the little ones can get used to the environment before you expect them to sleep in it. And, bring enough quarters for even the macho men to have a shower. We had a blast and enjoyed all of the yummy food and fond memories. Thanks Tana and Gabe!

A Blessing

Today Emma received her Baby Blessing. I am so grateful for the opportunity she had to be given this. It was an absolute amazing experience. Typically the mothers are not a part of the actual blessing, but since Emma is not an infant I got to go up and hold her on my lap. We were a little worried about her reaction to all the Priesthood holders gathering around her and laying their hands on her head. However, as Daddy carried her up there she was calm and sat on the chair with me. Then the Priesthood began to gather around, she looked around a little worried, but the last one to come up was Uncle Gabe. She saw him through the middle of the other men and held her arms out to him in such a warm, welcoming way. As they laid their hands on her head she was completely calm and relaxed. I also felt this way, it's amazing what the Priesthood can do!
This day we are so blessed to have had my sisters and the example of their families. We are so blessed to have been touched so much by baby Shane and his wonderful spirit. We are so blessed to be where we are in our lives today and have a true and growing relationship with our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ. We are so blessed to have Emma and to be trusted by Heavenly Father to bring her up in the light of Christ.

Emma is blessed to have a Daddy that offered a beautiful blessing upon her. She is a sweet, kind and loving little girl that I know will touch many throughout her life. She has a very soft but strong spirit about her. I hope that she will grow to know and love her Heavenly Father and be able to share her love to help others. She is an amazing blessing to us and I am so grateful for her and the way she has touched our lives! What a beautiful gift to have the opportunity to be a mother and to be trusted with such innocent spirits that are in need of the nurturing and truth of the word of God.
